Pricing straight talk

Can you give me a rough price and turnaround time for sandblasting in Jackson?

Yes. The mobile rig runs $150 to $250 an hour, flat steel with light rust or paint runs $2 to $4 per square foot, multi-coat commercial surface prep $4 to $8, and single pieces like a trailer frame or a set of wheels finish in hours to a day. Those are the published rates for the Jackson metro. The firm number for your job takes photos with something for scale, and usually comes back the same day.

What does sandblasting cost around Jackson, by the kind of job?

It depends on which of three things you are buying: time on the rig, square feet of surface, or a whole piece. Most callers describe one of those without knowing it, so the table below sorts the published rate sheet by how the job gets priced and how long it typically takes. National cost guides put blasting at roughly $2 to $7 per square foot and $45 to $300 an hour for the operator, which brackets the Jackson numbers; the difference here is that the equipment is in the hourly rate and the number is on the site before you call.

JobPublished rangeTypical time on site
Wheels, brackets, small parts (each, batched)$75 - $250Minutes each; a pallet fits in a half day
Car body, frame or chassis$1,200 - $2,500Most of a day; filler and undercoating add hours
Equipment or machinery piece$800 - $3,000Half day to a full day
Light rust or paint on flat steel, per sq ft$2 - $4Several hundred square feet per day
Multi-coat commercial surface prep, per sq ft$4 - $8Slower; old layered enamel can halve the daily footage
Brick or masonry cleaning, per sq ft$3 - $6A storefront facade in one to two days
Graffiti, single tag$300 - $800Under an hour on site
Structural steel or tank sections$5,000 - $25,000Days to weeks, by the section, against a coating spec
Rush: on site within 48 hours+$300 - $700Added once; the honest cost of bumping a scheduled job

Why can't you just tell me the number for my job on the phone?

Because two things that look identical on the phone can be a two-hour job and a two-day job, and the difference is under the coating. Five variables move the price and the clock, in roughly this order.

  1. Coating thickness and type. Surface rust on bare steel blasts fast. Six layers of old alkyd enamel on a 1970s tank, or powder coat, or bed liner, do not. This one variable is why per-square-foot prep has a $4 to $8 band instead of a number.
  2. Substrate. Mild steel takes aggressive media and a fast pass. Soft red brick, cast aluminum, fiberglass and old mortar joints take gentler media at lower pressure, which means more time per square foot.
  3. Access and setup. A trailer frame in an open yard is ten minutes of setup. A mezzanine beam over running equipment, or a facade over a sidewalk, needs containment, sheeting and recovery, which is the $500 to $2,000 add-on line.
  4. What comes after. Blasting that precedes a coating has to hit a surface profile spec and get primed before flash rust sets in. Jackson humidity makes that a same-day sequence, so the schedule has to leave room for the painter.
  5. Lead paint or hazardous coatings. Pre-1978 structures get tested first. If lead is present, containment and disposal change the job, and the EPA lead rules decide how it is handled, not the clock.

How long will my job take, and how soon can you get here?

On-site time and calendar time are two different answers. On-site time follows the table above: single pieces in hours, a car body or a machine in a day, a facade or a structure by the section over days. Calendar time depends on the schedule when you call, and the published rush line, $300 to $700 for a rig on site within 48 hours, exists so a tagged storefront or a coating crew waiting on prep does not have to beg for a slot.

Weather is the honest wildcard for anything outdoors that gets coated afterward. The National Weather Service Jackson climate records show why: summer mornings here routinely start near saturation, and blasted steel begins to flash rust within hours when the air is that wet. The sequence that works is blast after the dew burns off, prime the same afternoon, and never leave bare steel overnight. For jobs where the finish does not matter, a trailer frame headed for a shop paint booth, for example, humidity barely moves the schedule.

What should I send to get a firm number today?

Three photos and two sentences. One photo wide enough to show the whole piece or surface, one close enough to show the coating and any rust or filler, and one with something for scale, a boot, a tape measure, a truck. Then say what the surface is and what happens to it afterward: powder coat, paint, nothing. With that, the quote comes back in writing off the rate sheet, usually the same day, and the number on the quote is the number on the invoice. Every piece is different, so the specific figure for yours is a photo away, not a guess on this page.

If you are comparing bids, the guide to choosing a sandblasting contractor in Jackson covers the questions that expose a quote missing containment, media or disposal. For occupied sites where dust is the constraint, the dustless mobile blasting page explains how the price and the schedule change, and the industrial coating removal page covers the structural and tank work that gets quoted against a spec.

Who this pricing is not for

Wood. Blasting softwood siding or a log home with anything but the gentlest media scars it, and that is a soda or dry-ice job best priced by someone who does it daily. Glass etching and fine decorative work are cabinet-blasting trades, not mobile rig work. And interior jobs that need a dust-free finish without containment are not realistic on any schedule; ask, and the answer will be the dustless setup and its add-on, or a referral.
